What to Do When Your College Student Takes a Semester Off

What to Do When Your College Student Takes a Semester Off
If your student is considering taking a semester off of college, or taking what’s called a term withdrawal, you might have a lot of questions and concerns.

As a parent, the idea of your student taking a semester off college can be a bit stressful. You might worry they’ll never go back, or that if they do, they might not be able to catch back up and stay on track with good grades.

But while the idea of your student taking a semester off may cause you some concern, there are situations when college may need to take a temporary backseat for your son or daughter.

Some of the most common reasons a student may have for taking a semester off are:

It’s reasonable to have concerns about your student taking a semester off. But in reality, there are also pros to taking a break from school. And in many cases, it’s what your student needs to be able to return to school refreshed and ready to hit the books.

Supporting Your Child When They Need a Semester Off College

Whatever reason your student may have for taking a semester off, it’s important to communicate and show support to ensure they understand the implications of their decision.

Being a supportive parent is also a good way to help them return to school as quickly as possible. The more you help them, the more focus they can give to whatever it is that caused them to take a semester off.

Ways to support your child during their semester off include:

  • Help them make a plan for returning to school
  • Help them make goals for their semester off
  • Discuss living plans for the semester and make sure you’re both on the same page
  • Let them know you’re there for them
  • Remind them of the purpose of the break and the goals they set at the beginning of it
  • Provide financial support if needed and possible

Providing Your Student with a Storage Solution for their Semester Off

Out of everything to consider before taking a semester off college, one that is often overlooked is what your student will do with all their belongings.

If they live in the dorms, they won’t be able to leave their things behind. And if they rent an apartment, they probably don’t want to pay rent for the months they’re out of town.

If your student is taking a break because of financial, health, or family complications, dealing with moving all their stuff back home for one semester is additional unwelcome stress.

Even if your student can move their belongings back home for the semester, this can be a huge hassle depending on where you live, and considering your student will need to bring it all back again next semester.

The solution? College Student Storage. We serve CSU, CU Boulder, School of Mines, University of Denver, and more schools on Colorado’s Front Range.

If your student has decided to take a semester off, you can support them by contacting College Student Storage. We can pack up, move, and store their belongings, including large furniture, outdoor gear, and even their car.

And when your student returns to school after their break, we’ll deliver everything to their new address.

The benefits of storing with CSS during a semester off include:

Packing

  • We provide the boxes, labels, tape, and more for packing smaller items.

Moving:

  • Our staff picks up everything from your student’s dorm or apartment, on or off campus.
  • You won’t have to travel to your child’s school to help them move, which means you won’t need to pay for a hotel or rental car, which saves you time and money and makes everything less stressful.
  • Your student (and their friends) won’t have to waste time, money, and energy packing their car with all of their stuff, finding packing supplies, putting everything into a storage locker, or any of the other typical moving hassles.

Storing:

  • Our climate-controlled facilities ensure all items are stored in excellent condition.
  • CSS warehouses are equipped with motion sensors and cameras, so you can rest assured your child’s property won’t be damaged or stolen.
  • We store more than just books and electronics — we also handle large items such as sporting equipment, couches, and even cars.
  • CSS provides storage options for fall and spring semesters, as well as over summer and holiday breaks. Whenever your student needs storage, we’re here to help.

Delivery:

  • CSS delivers belongings to the new address when your child returns from their semester off — and if they decide to take a longer break and want items delivered back home, we can take care of that, too.

How Term Withdrawal Storage with CSS Works

If your student is planning a semester off from college and is interested in storing their belongings with CSS, we make it as easy as possible for them.

Here’s how it works from beginning to end:

  • Contact us for a quote on storage needs, or sign up your student now »
  • Your child gets boxes and packing supplies from us and packs everything they’d like us to pick up and store.
  • CSS staff comes and picks up your student’s packed belongings so they can focus on the other logistics of their semester off.
  • When your child is ready to return to school, give us a move-in date (and new address if they have one) and we’ll deliver all belongings to them when they return.

Storage Pricing for College Students Taking a Semester Off

Our storage pricing is dependent on how much your student needs to store and where exactly they live, which determines how far our pick-up and delivery staff will need to travel.

If your child lives on campus, pricing is generally $300-$400 per semester. If they live off campus, it’s $650 to $750 per semester. That price covers a room of furniture, like a bed and a couch, boxes for a room of belongings, and includes all delivery and pick-up costs.

We can also store a car for ~$250 a month. The bonus of car storage is that your student can fill their car with whatever they like for no additional fee. And we make it super easy. We’ll pick the vehicle up and deliver it. All cars are protected in a climate-controlled warehouse during storage. If needed, we can also deliver your student’s car back to your family’s home.

Plan Storage for a Semester Off, Whatever the Reason

One common reason for taking a semester off is for sick leave. If your child has been diagnosed with an illness, needs surgery, or has suffered an injury and requires time off to heal, College Student Storage can help.
